Odesk debit card

I just received my Odesk debit MasterCard powered by Payoneer. Shiny black with silver engraving, the design just stands out when you compare it to other CCs.

This would hopefully be a good alternative to moneybookers which Odesk been using ever since I joined them. Lower service rates and faster transfers - so they say. Let us see.

When a good Filipino programmer makes all Filipino programmers look good

I’ve encountered many foreign clients who has special preference on the type of nationality a web programmer or designer has. Some would opt for an all Ukrainian programmer, others prefer Indians or Filipinos. But whatever their preferences are, it simply boils down to the past experience they had. Their assumptions are, if I hired a good Filipino programmer once then most of the Filipino programmers are good - and vise versa.

The problem with these assumptions is that if they hired an incompetent Filipino programmer, then all Filipino programmers are affected. Many programmers, not only Filipinos, are already jumping into projects that still doesn’t match their skills hoping to learn while working. It’s a gamble, which I also did before, that most often results in failed projects and miserable clients promising themselves not to hire another programmer with same nationality as the one he hired.

How I started being a fulltime freelance programmer

Early in my professional career, I never expected that I will have a long lived romance with web programming. I jumped from one job to the other - did a 15 day stint with GSIS, a 1 month jam with Hitachi Computer Products in Laguna as well as a 4 months gig with Coca Cola and not to mention 3 other jobs i did in between.

After resigning with Coke and with a little financing from Mom ( who else?) I set up an internet cafe with three Pentium II 350 computers along Bonifacio St near University of Immaculate Conception campus. During that time I had no background with regards to the internet nor I had an email address of my own. Anyway, what was important was I am my own boss at 24.

Where are all the Electrical Engineers?

Those introvert, socially challenged, soft spoken and most are suffering from electrocution trauma are slowly dwindling in numbers.

I graduated BS in Electrical Engineer(BSEE) in Ateneo de Davao almost a decade ago and we were 9 to march successfully on graduation day. The year previous that, there was only 3. Couple of years after that, BS in Electronics Communications Engineering as well as BS in Architechture was added that caused even fewer EE enrollees.

Slowly, Electrical Engineers are getting fewer each year and possible reasons are:

Who’s Who on April 19th

April 19 is a day of extremes.

It is the 109th day of the year and written as 419 on some notes. The number 1 and 9 are extreme numbers and 0 is the absence of value. It is found on the first zodiac sign (Aries) and happens to be near ,some year actually is, the last day of Aries.

It is the day that great and the worst people were born. To name a few:

1. Maria Sharapova - Tennis superstar

How far could the ‘o’ in google go?

Before I go investing in domains, I did a little research on how far the domainers have gone in positioning themselves for those lucrative domains.

Here’s one that got me amused:

A broken ‘o’ key would earn you traffic here.

Web Development Blog

More than a month now without a post.

It justifies why I won the emptiest blog during the Davao Blog Party . Though I really don’t intend this blog to be crowned as such - even if the prize I got was a cool stuff from Google.

To make something out of this, I decided to make it a blog about web development. Starting today i’ll try to post some random stuff that will focus on tools, techniques, best practices, howtos on web development more specifically on using PHP and MySQL.

Danny’s Song

I’ve been waiting for three years to sing Kenny Loggin’s Danny’s Song.

People smile and tell me I’m the lucky one
And we’ve just begun, think I’m gonna have a son
He will be like she and me, as free as a dove
Conceived in love, sun is gonna shine above ….
