When a good Filipino programmer makes all Filipino programmers look good
I’ve encountered many foreign clients who has special preference on the type of nationality a web programmer or designer has. Some would opt for an all Ukrainian programmer, others prefer Indians or Filipinos. But whatever their preferences are, it simply boils down to the past experience they had. Their assumptions are, if I hired a good Filipino programmer once then most of the Filipino programmers are good - and vise versa.
The problem with these assumptions is that if they hired an incompetent Filipino programmer, then all Filipino programmers are affected. Many programmers, not only Filipinos, are already jumping into projects that still doesn’t match their skills hoping to learn while working. It’s a gamble, which I also did before, that most often results in failed projects and miserable clients promising themselves not to hire another programmer with same nationality as the one he hired.
On the other hand, we can use stereotyping to our advantage - if a Filipino programmer is good then all Filipino programmers are good.
I was both. I was once a lousy programmer tainting the image of other Filipino programmers but ever since I achieved a certain level of proficiency I’m proud to say that I also helped dozens of IT professionals earn their living on the internet because I was good :).
